Living through a Home Renovation
Creating your dream home isn’t as simple a task as some would think. However, you can't always buy a house and then continue to live in it without any changes or running into any problems that require updates to be made. Chances are that at some point while you live in your home, you will have to consider moving out or renovating your current house to make it liveable.
The reasons for this could be many. You might have a growing family and need to add extra space to your home or you've taken a new job and need to establish a small home office. Renovating usually seems easier than moving out, and a little cheaper as well. What many people don’t realize however, is that living through a home renovation is not a simple task.
Think it Through
Before you start to renovate your house, think about where you are going to live while the process goes on. You should realize that it is going to be a lot of work, especially if you are planning to take out walls or add on an addition.
It is virtually impossible to continue living in a house where lots of dust and debris is being generated every day. The first mistake people make while planning a renovation is that they believe they can go on living in the same house while major renovations are being done.
The Problems with Temporary Residence
When people don’t think about where they are going to live during the renovation, they run into all sorts of problems. The first and foremost is the problem of finding a new place to live for the time being on short notice. This can be hard in a city where most rental leases are for a minimum of a year. The second problem comes when you have to decide where to store all your stuff while you’re away.
Both these problems are not usually thought through by the owners of the house under renovation far enough in advance causing these problems to lead to a very substantial increase in the overall cost of the project.
The Possible Solutions
There are some possible solutions to this problem like staying in a hotel for an extended period of time or looking for a corporate furnished rental. The problem is that many people don’t think about this beforehand, and that leads to not finding the right kind of place to live based on their needs or budget.
Services like Airbnb and HomeAway can be used to find short-term rentals. The key is to start looking right from the start, before the actual time comes for you to move out and being your renovations.
Some people decide to continue living in their house while the renovations are going on. While this is possible, provided they have a house where one part can be cordoned off, it leads to an increase in the expense up to 50% of the total cost. The reason is that the project has to be done in phases, and contractors and workers have to visit the site more often.
If your home needs a renovation, be sure to work out all of these details before the project starts because living in your home while it's under construction is going to be much harder than you probably anticipated.
