Amazon Echo Is Creating the Right Waves
One would think that big names like Apple, Samsung, or Google would be leading the race when it comes to smart homes. But it's actually Amazon that first came up with a device that has universal functionality and that's pretty easy to use.
The Amazon Echo is what this little wonder is called, and it's sort of like a voice-activated concierge capable of controlling smart devices in your home. Of course, compatibility is still limited but at least the foundation is there. You would need certain devices to sync with the Amazon Echo in order to give you voice controls over some appliances and perform simple functions. But other than that, the only other thing you'd need is a Wi-Fi connection.
Establishing connectivity between your appliances and the Echo isn't too hard. You just have to make sure that they are all connected to the same Wi-Fi network, which most of us probably know how to do with our devices.
The Echo has a name, Alexa, just like Apple's Siri. They don't function the same way but it's still kind of fun. Once all the devices are connected to a Wi-Fi network, these can then be discovered by the Echo after you say, "Alexa, discover my appliances."
But this isn't the only thing the Echo can do. It is, first and foremost, a Bluetooth speaker. It's also capable of streaming music, telling you the weather, giving sports highlights, and even accessing Wikipedia. Not bad at all for a speaker, right?
For now, the Amazon Echo only supports Wi-Fi connection, so this could be a limiting factor as response rates may vary depending on Internet speeds. And it's not available for everyone to just order. This can only be purchased by invitation. That doesn't take away the fact that it's one amazing piece of tech. And there could be further developments coming up, so we'll just have to wait and see. That's provided, of course, that other big players don't come up with something that overshadows it.
What Makes the Amazon Echo Stand Out
Many probably haven't heard about the Echo and what it can do, but here are some reasons why it still commands some attention and respect.
- Good Head Start Over its Competitors
The thing about keeping a low profile is that it sometimes gives you an edge and enables you to pull off a surprising outcome. Gaining a good foothold ahead of the competition is an excellent start for Amazon, especially since no one expected it.
The technology for smart homes still has some ways to go before becoming a "household" thing. But it's good that you have the option to enjoy this capability to some degree on the Amazon Echo. And if you don't feel like setting it up for voice commands with your appliances, you can always use it as a speaker.
- Ease of Use
If you dabble a bit with gadgets and Wi-Fi connections, then there's no reason to have any trouble setting up the Echo. Think of the freedom and convenience you can enjoy in being able to set up a smart home without having to pay professionals to do it for you.
Despite some limitations, the Amazon Echo is certainly on the right track. While there certainly will be some stiff competition in the smart home space, Amazon has been able to turn some heads and might even be quietly cooking something up that will once again surprise everybody.
